Overview

Umm Qais, an archaeological site dating back to the third century, was originally a military colony under Alexander the Great, known as 'Gadara.' The Battle of Yarmouk in 636 CE, near Gadara, shifted the region under Arab-Muslim rule. Despite destruction in 749 CE by the Galilee earthquake, the settlement persisted until the 11th century. The site boasts two ancient theaters, the basilica terrace, and an Ottoman village.
