This hilltop fortified palace offers panoramic views of the Dead Sea region and Palestine. According to Flavius Josephus, it was at the Fortress of Machaerus that Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, ordered the imprisonment and beheading of John the Baptist.

Bike from Mount Nebo to Mukawer castle, an intermediate route with occasional easy climbs, starting from 710 meters above sea level. Traverse countryside roads, passing Fayhaa, Ma'an, and Mukawer villages, where friendly locals may strike up a chat. Enjoy stunning viewpoints of the Dead Sea along hilly roads, leading to the impressive Mukawer Castle (Machaerus) atop the fortified hill.
